SSL Renewal in Four Easy Steps
The expiry date of an SSL certificate is encoded in the digital file. When it lapses, you cannot change the validity period on the file itself. Instead, you’ll need to procure a new cert and replace the expired one with it. Here’s how to go about extending your certificate’s expiry date:
Generate a new SSL cert
Before your SSL certificate expires, you’ll receive a notice via email. It’s possible to renew it between 30 to 90 days prior to expiration. All you have to do is purchase the certificate by following the instructions in your inbox or through your SSL provider’s account panel.
Activate your SSL cert
After your purchase, you’ll need to activate your certificate. First, access your hosting company’s control panel to generate a new CSR code. After that, head to your SSL certificates tab to activate your new cert.
Validate your SSL cert
Validating your new certificate occurs in one of three ways: file-based, email, or domain registrar information. Prepare the documents listed on the certificate authority beforehand for a smooth validation process.
Install your SSL cert
Once you complete the first three steps, locate the tab where you manage SSL sites. Here, you’ll fill in the contents from your .crt file. Alternatively, contact your hosting company’s support team and they’ll get it done for you.
